98% Vote “Yes” for Morocco Constitutional Reforms

Morocco King Mohammad VI received public approval on the constitutional reforms he proposed in June after mass rallies against the regime.

98% voted “yes” in the referendum put forward, as announced by Morocco Interior Minister Taib Cherkaoui in a TV statement Friday. Media reports indicated that voter turnout was 72.65%.

The proposal included transferring many of the king’s powers to an elected PM and parliament, considering that such a reform would consolidate the pillars of a constitutional monarchy."

While internal opposing sides quickly denounced the result considering that “the referendum was illegal and was marked by massive violations of democratic principles," the United States hailed it indicating that “this was an important step in Morocco’s ongoing democratic development.”

U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner said “in this period of profound change, we think it's important and we congratulate the people of Morocco and their leadership for the peaceful referendum."

King Mohmmad VI’s proposed constitutional reforms leave keep the king in control of the military and religion in Morocco.
