Iranian President Sheikh Hasan Rouhani slammed the Saudi aggression on Yemen, stressing that Riyadh carried out the attack because of its failure to materialize its wishes in the region.
“Destroying the infrastructure of an impoverished country and killing children, women and men make no sense other than [meaning] that a country has lost its balance, and there can be no other interpretations,” Rouhani told reporters on Tuesday at Mehrabad Airport before leaving Tehran for Indonesia to attend the Asia Africa Conference.
He said Riyadh has failed to materialize its wishes in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and North Africa, and is now trying to make up for these failures by bombing yet another country in the region.
Stressing that the world community should firmly condemn the Saudi-led attacks, Rouhani called for international support for Iran's recent proposal to the UN to settle the crisis in Yemen.
The Iranian president called for an immediate ceasefire in the Arab country, stressing that military intervention in Yemen will not lead anywhere and that only dialog among different political groups can put an end to its crisis.
Earlier last week, Iran sent a 4-step Yemen peace initiative to the UN chief.
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif wrote a letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Friday, and demanded adoption of the necessary moves by the world body to put an immediate end to the bloodshed, describing the conditions on the ground in Yemen as "alarming".
Nuclear Deal Will Benefit All Countries
Touching on Iran’s nuclear program, Rouhani said that a final nuclear deal between Tehran and the P5+1 group would benefit all countries, adding that Tehran’s negotiations with the P5+1 countries were “proceeding forward.”
“We continue the negotiations with serious determination and hope that the opposite side demonstrates the same will as well, so that we can reach a general and detailed agreement within the next couple of months,” the Iranian president said.
Rouhani added that a nuclear agreement would pave the way for better cooperation between Iran and regional as well as Asian countries.
