"President Assad is not indispensable and we have absolutely nothing invested in him remaining in power”, Clinton told reporters.
"If anyone, including President Assad, thinks that the United States is secretly hoping that the regime will emerge from this turmoil to continue its brutality and repression, they are wrong", Clinton added.

Hours earlier, Assad supporters damaged the buildings of the US and French embassies in the Syrian capital, in protest against US meddling in Syria’s internal affairs.

Witnesses and officials said anti-US demonstrators broke into the American diplomatic compound and smashed windows on Monday.
An embassy official said no personnel were injured in the incident but there was damage to property.

Syrian protesters also gathered outside the French embassy in Damascus, where security guards fired warning shots to drive back protesters.
"Syrians demonstrated peacefully in front of the French embassy but they were faced with bullets,''  Press TV quoted a witness, Hiam al-Hassan, as saying.
