The Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said in a meeting with UN Secretary General's Special Envoy on Lebanon Affairs Segrid Kaag on Monday that Iran supports any type of political consensus to resolve problems in Lebanon.
Zarif and Ms. Kaag in the meeting exchanged views on the prevailing political status in Lebanon and the volatile Middle East region.
The Iranian top diplomat in the meeting supported the beginning of dialogues among various Lebanese groups and parties, arguing that political stability in Lebanon is ideal for the Islamic Republic of Iran.
'Any political decision adopted by the Lebanese in those dialogues is fully supported by Iran,' he further stressed.
Zarif also noted he is sure if the foreign pressure will be lifted from the Lebanese political scene the Lebanese people will much sooner achieve a proper political solution, expressing hope that just as before, the UN will play its supportive role in that process.
He also renewed the Iranian government and nation's deep concern about the fate of the kidnapped Iranian diplomats in Lebanon and asked for UN's assistance in resolving the problem.
The UN undersecretary, too, for her part appreciated Iran's role in preservation of peace and stability in Lebanon.
Ms. Kaag said that being not elected of the new Lebanese president creates a legal and social vacuum in that country, which is neither appropriate for that country, nor for the region.
'Yet, despite all those conditions, the prevailing stability in Lebanon despite all the crises in the region is very significant and needs to pe properly safeguarded,' she added.
Segrid Kaag also had a meeting on Monday, noon time, with Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Huossein Amir-Abdollahian and exchanged viewpoints on Lebanon developments with him.
