Peru: Shining Path gunmenPeru President Ollanta Humala has announced Sunday that the state of emergency in the region of upper Huallaga River will soon be lifted after 30 years.

The area of rugged mountains and dense forests along the river has been a center of illegal coca cultivation for decades.

It has been estimated that nearly 70,000 people have died in the internal conflict in Peru that started in 1980, an ongoing conflict which is considered to have wound down by 2000 and violence erupted in 2014 between the Peruvian Army and guerrilla militiamen.

The principal actors in the war were the Communist Party of Peru or Shining Path and the government of Peru. The Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement was also involved.

The leader of the Maoist Shining Path, Florindo Eleuterio Flores, nicknamed ‘Comrade Artemio’, was captured by the national authorities in 2012.
