Saudi security forces found flags of the so-called ’Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant’ (ISIL) takfiri group during a raid on Friday in which an officer was shot dead.

dead, the kingdom's interior ministry said.

The killing came with the Gulf region on alert against attacks by ISIL, which has been blamed for killing other Saudi policemen and has claimed three deadly  mosque bombings in the kingdom and Kuwait.

"They arrested three suspects, confiscated Daesh (Arabic acronym of ISIL) flags, silencers and personal laptops," the ministry said in a statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency.

Western media and intelligence agencies reports revealed that Saudi Arabia and other regional countries, like Qatar and Turkey, are the main sponsors of takfiri groups operating in Syria and Iraq.
