Iran’s military shot down a suspected reconnaissance drone in a province on its western border with Iraq, a military official said Saturday.

"A while ago, an unknown drone entered the area and was identified by our monitoring systems," Farzad Fereydouni, air defense commander for Kermanshah province, told the official IRNA news agency.

spy droneThe unarmed drone was "engaged and shot down" by Iran's missile systems, he said, without giving any details on its origin or when it was intercepted.

Fereydouni said that there are two types of drone: some of them are only aimed for reconnaissance and the others are also capable of fighting besides their capability of reconnaissance.

He said that the downed drone was of the first type, designed only for reconnaissance missions.

He provided no further information on the starting point of the drone and where it was aiming to survey.
