While the UNSC adopted its first condemnation to Syria, Lebanon disavowed from it
The UN Security Council on Wednesday condemned “the widespread violations of human rights and the use of force against civilians by the Syrian authorities” and called for those responsible for “violence” to be held “accountable.”
“The Security Council calls on the Syrian authorities to fully respect human rights and to comply with their obligations under applicable international law. Those responsible for the violence should be held accountable,” the text read.
The council also called on Syrian authorities to “cooperate fully” with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
However, Lebanon disassociated itself from the presidential statement condemning Syria. Caroline Ziade, deputy permanent representative of Lebanese mission to the UN, made the remarks after the 15-member Council adopted the statement.
“While we expect our deep regret for the loss of innocent victims and we offer our condolences to their families, we hope that Syrian reform will lead to progress and prosperity. But since Lebanon considers that the statement being discussed in our meeting today does not help in addressing the current situation in Syria therefore, Lebanon dissociates itself from this presidential statement,” she said.
