Before the start of his meeting with Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, Bassil stressed that "a political solution is the only way to solve the Syrian crisis and this is agreed upon by everyone."

He pointed out that the so-called 'Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant' (ISIL) takfiri group "is no longer a threat to the region but to the whole world as well, and the recent incident in France is the best proof of that."

For his part, Lavrov emphasized that Russia "will do its best to prevent the expansion of terrorism to Lebanon."

Bassil traveled to Russia later on Tuesday on an official two-day visit. He is set to hold talks with his Russian counterpart on combating terrorism, as well as the resolving presidential deadlock in Lebanon.
