US Secretary of Defense Ash Carter arrived at the Incirlik Air Base in Turkey near the Syrian border on a moral visit to US troops stationed at the base that has become a key hub for American-led alleged air raids against ISIL.

US Secretary of Defense Ash Carter arrived at the Incirlik Air Base in Turkey near the Syrian border on a moral visit to US troops stationed at the base that has become a key hub for American-led alleged air raids against the so-called 'Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant' (ISIL) takfiri group.

Carter was met by the Adana Governer Mustafa Buyuk as well as other US and Turkish officials.

Carter said he will be asking his military commanders and other officials to come up with new tactics that can be used to attack ISIL, and identify new contributions that coalition partners can make to accelerate the destruction of the terrorist group.

Speaking to reporters traveling with him, Carter said the US wants Turkey to better control its border with Syria, which could help block the flow of foreign militants.

"We want Turkish forces to join in the air and on the ground as appropriate," he said.

Associated Press reported that Carter left the US immediately after meeting with President Barack Obama and the National Security Council in the Pentagon on Monday.

"We need to identify and then carry out every conceivable way of accelerating the defeat of ISIL," said Carter. "The president is asking all of us to do more."

Carter and other US and coalition leaders have recently been claiming progress in the fight, saying ISIL is on the defensive and losing some ground.
