Lebanese Military Prosecutor Judge Saqr Saqr Wednesday filed charges against unknown Israeli soldiers over the killing of a Spanish peacekeeper during a border Israeli violation in January.
The charges will be applied to any Israeli officers and soldiers who are proven by investigators to have taken part in the shelling.
A judicial source told The Daily Star that a preliminary investigation conducted by a joint committee comprised of personnel from the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon, the United Nations and the Lebanese government was referred to Saqr, who in turn referred it to Military Investigative Judge Riad Abu Ghaida.
"Israel didn't cooperate with the investigation," the source said, adding that Lebanese authorities are compelled to press charges even if the guilty parties are unknown since the incident occurred on Lebanese territory.
Cpl. Francisco Javier Soria Toledo was killed on Jan. 28 by an Israeli shell that hit his post near the border village of Ghajar.
