Kremlin says to learn from Euro 2016 for World Cup security

Russia's President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday highlighted the need to draw security lessons from Euro 2016 ahead of hosting the World Cup two years from now.

The meeting of Putin's security council convened after serious incidents involving Russian and English fans at the European Championship finals in France.

The security council, Putin's key decision-making circle, convened to talk about "the necessity to draw lessons on the issues of security from France's experience of organizing football events," the Kremlin said in a statement.

The discussion was "in the context of the continuing preparations for the Football World Championships in Russia in 2018," it said.

Russia is to host the international football showcase in 2018 but the behavior of Russian hooligans in France has cast a shadow over the event.

Football's European governing body UEFA have said Russia will be disqualified from Euro 2016 if there is any more crowd trouble in the stadium.
