The United Arab Emirates have said that the “war is over” for its troops in Yemen; however, they may continue "counterterrorism" operations in the country, AP reports.
The Emirati troops have suffered major losses in Yemen as a large number of soldiers were killed and several helicopters were downed by the Yemeni army and popular committees.
Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan announced the decision on his official Twitter account late Wednesday.
He was quoting the UAE’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Anwar Gargash, who had given a speech saying the “war is over for our troops.” An Arabic version of his comments said the war was “practically” over.
The UAE has been among the basic members of a Saudi-led coalition striking Yemen since March 26, 2015.
Thousands have been martyred and injured in the attack, with the vast majority of them are civilians.
