Berri Calls for Parliamentary Session to Discuss Pending Bills

Berri calls on the joint parliamentary committees to hold a meeting for reviewing the electricity plan on Wednesday afternoon

Lebanon Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri called for holding a parliamentary session on Thursday to follow up and approve a number of pending draft bills on the agenda of the parliamentary council, a statement issued on Tuesday by Berri’s office said.

The statement added that Berri called on the joint parliamentary committees to hold a meeting for reviewing the electricity plan on Wednesday afternoon.

On Monday, the joint parliamentary commissions convened to address March 14 MP’s amendments on the electricity bill presented by Energy Minister Gebran Bassil but no agreement was reached.

“The joint parliamentarian commissions, composed of Administration and Justice Commission; Finance and Budget Commission; Public Works, Energy and Water Commission; convened on Monday 12:15 pm under the chairmanship of Deputy Robert Ghanem at the public library hall of the House Parliament, to discuss the power plan already endorsed by the government last week,” the National News Agency reported. But the session has been postponed to Wednesday as the discussion herein led to no result, it added.

Loyalty to the Resistance MP Ali Ammar said during a press conference at Parliament on Monday that his parliamentary bloc will not accept any attempt to reduce the powers of any minister.

“There are attempts [being] made by the team that calls itself ‘opposition’ to disable the electricity project by [violating] constitutional principles,” he added.

Earlier this month, the cabinet approved the power plan aimed at increasing electricity output by 700 Megawatts following a long argument between ministers.
