Lebanese Speaker Nabih Berri urged different political parties to bear in mind the people’s interests, saying that some officials were carrying out aggravating actions against each other concerning the electricity project, and noting that those who have been opposing the bill had agreed on during Hariri’s ex-cabinet.
In remarks published on Wednesday by the daily An-Nahar, Berri said: “I call on all the political powers, March 8 forces and March 14-led opposition, to work on providing the Lebanese people with their livelihood demands”.
“Some parties, unfortunately, are implementing bullying policies instead of tackling the real interests of the people and their daily life especially that the people are suffering from tough days in the beginning of the school year”.
In other remarks published by As-Safir daily, Berri noted that those who were opposing the proposed electricity plan have already agreed on it during ex-Premier Saad Hariri’s cabinet”.
On Tuesday, Berri called on the parliament to convene on Thursday in order to address various pending issues on the agenda, including a $1.2 billion electricity draft law.
March 14 MPs expressed their opposition to the bill, in an attempt to hinder the draft law which was proposed by member of Change and Reform bloc, Energy Minister Jebran Bassil.
On the other hand, and ahead of a south visit scheduled by Maronite Patriarch Bechara Boutros al-Rai on Saturday, the Speaker welcomed the move, adding that the patriarch does not need an invitation to visit these villages.
“He will be among his family and parishioners”, he told As-Safir.
