Lebanese PM Najib Miqati held talks in New York on Monday with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during which he assured her that the Lebanese government will honor its international obligations.

Prime Minister Najib Miqati held talks in New York on Monday with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during which he assured her that the Lebanese government will honor its international obligations, the premier's office said in a statement.

According to the statement, Clinton stressed “the United States’ commitment to help Lebanon achieve a better future.”

She also emphasized “the need for Lebanon to continue to respect its international obligations, which would preserve its stability and unity,” the PM’s office said.

The meeting was held at the office of the head of the United Nations Security Council. Lebanon currently holds the council's rotating presidency.

The prime minister traveled to New York on Saturday to head a session for the Security Council.

Lebanon’s interest lies in “respecting U.N. resolutions and avoiding selectivity in their implementation,” Miqati said in New York on Sunday.

He is scheduled to hold talks with top U.N. officials, including Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

Miqati will chair the Security Council sessions on Tuesday where he is expected to address the current developments in the region.

Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour and Lebanon’s Ambassador to the U.N. Nawwaf Salam will also attend the sessions.

Miqati is scheduled to meet with Ban and heads of delegations participating in the 66th General Assembly meeting.
