At least eight people have been killed and 27 others wounded during clashes between Yemeni regime forces and the opposition in the capital, Sana'a.

The fighting broke out overnight when troops loyal to Ali Abdullah Saleh used rockets and heavy machine guns against anti-regime protesters, medical sources told AFP on Monday.

Three of the victims were killed in shelling in the Change Square where protesters demanding the ouster of Saleh have camped out for months.

Other fatalities occurred in the al-Hassaba northern neighborhood.

Earlier on Saturday, Saleh's forces killed 12 protesters and injured dozens of others, according to medics.
