Man Arrested for Forging Karzai\’s Signature: Official

The Afghan intelligence agency has arrested a man for forging the signatures of several high-ranking Afghan officials including President Karzai.

The Afghan intelligence agency has arrested a man for forging the signatures of several high-ranking Afghan officials including President Karzai, an official said Tuesday.

Abdul Waris, alias Ashina, was arrested in Jalalabad in eastern Afghanistan, with forged documents including a license to carry gun, Lutfullah Mashal, spokesman for Afghanistan's National Directorate of Security (NDS), told reporters in Kabul.

"The man was able to forge signatures of the president, defense minister, interior minister, head of traffic department, and the head of upper house of the parliament by using a computer," he said.

"He was introducing himself as a cameraman working for president's office."

The NDS spokesman did comment on whether the case was linked to the Taliban-led insurgency being fought against the Afghan government and coalition forces.

With severe corruption, poverty, growing violence and inept governance, the forging of documents has become common in the country.
