Iran Hopes Gaddafi Death Leads to New Political Era in Libya

Iran said Friday that it hoped the death of ousted Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi would lead to a new political era in Libya

Iran said Friday that it hoped the death of ousted Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi would lead to a new political era in Libya, official news agency IRNA reported.

"Iran hopes that with the end of the black dictatorship era of Gaddafi, the way will be paved for a new political era, formation of a national government in Libya and establishment of stability," Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said in a statement on IRNA.

"After this incident, there will also be no further excuse for foreign countries' interference in Libya, and the Libyans should be allowed to decide about their own political fate," the Iranian spokesman added.

Gaddafi was killed Thursday in his hometown of Sirte. His 42-year rule of the North African country has ended.

Mehmanparast offered Libya's new leaders Iranian assistance in their country's reconstruction.
