Afghan officials said NATO occupation forces killed a family of six civilians.
Afghan officials accused NATO occupation forces of killing a family of six civilians; a day after an Afghan governor said the alliance had killed at least 50 civilians and President Hamid Karzai adopted the accusation.Local officials told AFP news agency that a “misdirected” NATO missile hit a home in Nangarhar, killing a couple and their four children.
"The air strike was originally targeting three insurgents who were planting mines on a road. One missile mistakenly hit a house and killed six civilians, all members of the same family," said provincial spokesman Ahmad Zia Abdulzai.
Mohammad Hassen, governor of Khogyani district, confirmed the incident took place on his patch.
A local man, Bilal Karim, told AFP he was a cousin of the man of the family who died, named Patang. He put the death toll higher, at nine, and said the family had been visiting his wife's relatives when the attack happened.
The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said it was “investigating” the incident, which "resulted in Afghan civilians being accidentally killed and wounded", adding that the strike was “targeting insurgent planting a bomb.”
Earlier on Sunday, Governor of Kunar province, Fazlullah Wahidi said that around 50 civilians were killed in air raids by the US-led NATO occupation force against militants.
"In total 63 people have died," the governor said, adding that at least 20 of those killed were civilian women, 27 were males aged between seven and 20 and three were elderly men.
ISAF said that it was “conducting an immediate assessment of these allegations,” adding it will “report the findings.”
Citing information from local officials Karzai said "about 50 civilians have been martyred during international military forces operations in Ghaziabad district in Kunar province."
Adding that he "strongly condemns" the deaths, Karzai pledged to send investigators to the remote district.
