Cabinet Approves Raising Lebanese University Professors’ Salaries

The cabinet approved Education Minister Hassan Diab’s proposal to raise the salaries of the full-time professors of the Lebanese University

The cabinet approved on Thursday Education Minister Hassan Diab’s proposal to raise the salaries of the full-time professors of the Lebanese University putting an end to the 50 days old teachers' strike, Al-Manar TV reported.

The report also said that “some minor modifications might be added to the decision, and the professor’s salaries will become 3,7 million L.L.”

Information Minister Walid Daouq said following the cabinet meeting that “the government will reconsider its initial decision regarding the wage increase.”

On October 11, the cabinet decided to raise the minimum wage from 500,000 to 700,000 and add 300,000 to wages that range between 1 million and 1.8 million, while adding nothing to wages above 1.8 million. This decision was widely rejected and the State Shura Council issued a decision rejecting this decree.

“The cabinet accepts the State Shura Council’s decision, respects its content and will do its best to reach a decree that achieves justices and [respects] reality,” Daouq quoted premier Mikati as saying. He also said that “the cabinet formed a committee to reconsider the aforementioned decision.”
