Russia Mulls New Nuclear Power Plants in Iran

The head of Russia's state-controlled nuclear corporation Sergei Kiriyenko said Thursday that Moscow is considering Iran's proposal to build more nuclear power plants in the country.

“We are currently studying the proposal, as the international community has no concerns about the construction of nuclear power generation units,” head of Russia's Rosatom corporation said at a government meeting.

Russia's nuclear chief said that the construction of the new units would require changes in the 1992 agreement between Russia and Iran, adding that the issue was being considered at diplomatic levels.

The 1992 deal envisaged the construction of four nuclear reactors in Iran.

Iran officially launched Bushehr nuclear power plant on September 12, which started by generating electricity at 40 percent of its capacity.
