The International Criminal Court (ICC) urged Libya’s new regime to hand over the son of former leader Muammar Gaddafi, Seif al-Islam, who was arrested on Saturday.
ICC spokesman Fadi Al-Abdallah told AFP on Saturday that the Libyan authorities were obliged to cooperate with the court and surrender Seif al-Islam.
"If they want a trial in Libya, they must submit a request for dismissal and procedures in Libya must be conducted on the same charges as those contained in the warrant of the ICC," Abdallah noted.
ICC Chief Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo will head to Libya next week for talks with the transitional government authorities about the issue.
A senior official with Libya's interim government said on Saturday that the 39-year-old had been arrested in the south of the North African country.
Seif al-Islam is accused of organizing a plan to suppress the Libyan revolution together with his slain father through “any means necessary.”
On June 27, the ICC issued warrants against Gaddafi, Seif al-Islam, and the intelligence chief under the former Libyan regime Abdullah al-Senoussi.
The trio was accused of committing crimes against humanity during the former regime's crackdown on the anti-regime protests.
