Libya’s NTC: Seif Al-Islam Trial to be Held “Fairly” in Libya

NTC said it wanted Muammar Gaddafi’s son who was captured on Saturday to be tried in Libya rather than at the International Criminal Court.

Libya’s new regime said it wanted Muammar Gaddafi’s son who was captured on Saturday to be tried in Libya rather than at the International Criminal Court.

"We want the trial of Seif al-Islam to take place in Libya because Libyan justice is the rule and international justice is the exception”, the justice minister in the National Transitional Council Mohammed al-Allagui said on Sunday.

"We have the necessary guarantees for a fair trial, especially after the amendment of a law that guarantees the independence of the judiciary as regards the executive," he told Agence France Press.

Earlier, Interim Prime Minister Abdel Rahim al-Kib gave the assurance that Seif would be brought fairly to justice.
"I reassure our people and the world that Seif, and those with him, will be given a fair trial in which international rights and norms will be guaranteed," Kib told a news conference in Zintan.

"The judicial authorities will communicate with the International Criminal Court to examine where Seif al-Islam must be tried," he said.
"Any cooperation with international institutions is welcome," he added, implying that they would like him to be tried in Libya.

A senior official with Libya's interim government said on Saturday that the 39-year-old had been arrested in the south of the North African country.

Shortly after the announcment, the ICC urged Libya to surrender Seif al-islam.

Seif al-Islam is accused of organizing a plan to suppress the Libyan revolution together with his slain father through “any means necessary.”

On June 27, the ICC issued warrants against Gaddafi, Seif al-Islam, and the intelligence chief under the former Libyan regime Abdullah al-Senoussi.

The trio was accused of committing crimes against humanity during the former regime's crackdown on the anti-regime protests.
