The Egyptian military rulers apologized Thursday for the deaths of tens of demonstrators who were demanding an immediate handover to civilian control, on the hands of police.

After the security forces' deadly attacks that killed at least 35 protesters and injured more than 2,000 others, the Armed forces issued a statement on their Facebook page stating that “The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces presents its regrets and deep apologies for the deaths of martyrs from among Egypt's loyal sons during the recent events in Tahrir Square.”

“The council also offers its condolences to the families of the martyrs across Egypt,” the statement added.

Demonstrations continued overnight in the Tahrir square, even after Tuesday’s statement by Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi who tried to calm protesters in the square while completely ignoring the deadly attacks.

The SCAF further vowed in its statement to investigate and prosecute all those behind the deaths and pledged to offer assistance to the families of the dead and Injured.

Despite that, attacks and arrests against protesters continued overnight.
