Solution: funding STL, what’s next?
Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Miqati announced Wednesday that Lebanon has transferred its share of funding to the UN’s Special Tribunal for Lebanon in a move seen as a solution to cabinet’s stalemate but which would prompt reforms in the country.
This solution for the stalemate over STL funding came as cabinet session scheduled for Today afternoon was postponed. However, the solution seems not to end here, are there any guarantees?
But this does not constitute a victory for one party over another, Miqati clarified. He said the decision was in Lebanon's interest and would protect the country from the upheavals shaking the region.
Communications on different directions were underway yesterday in order to reach out a solution to the crisis of funding the STL. Consultations turned out so late at night thus there were some hurdles seen.
Well-informed sources told As-Safir newspaper that intensive contacts have made some progress, but without providing a happy ending.
Al-Manar correspondent had announced earlier that the cabinet session may be postponed and quoted sources close to Miqati as ruling out his resignation as it may lead to crisis in the government.
The cabinet session was postponed by a week to next Wednesday, a well-informed source told AFP on condition of anonymity. A government official, who also did not wish to be named, said the decision was made to give more time for political parties to reach a solution.
