Although the embattled Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh handed the power to the Vice-President, fight between rivals was still going on in the country.
Forces loyal to Saleh and dissident tribesmen clashed in the country’s second- largest city Taez, killing five people and injuring other 20 on Thursday, medics said.
"Five people were killed and 20 were wounded, many of them seriously," a medic from the city's Al-Rawda neighborhood told Agence France Press.
Witnesses said the fighting erupted early in the day as Saleh loyalist troops tried to storm the city center, a stronghold of armed tribesmen who have pledged support to the protest movement against Saleh's 33-year rule.
Troops of the 33rd Brigade entered several neighborhoods of Taez, but met stiff resistance in others, residents said.
All roads leading into the city have been blocked by fierce fighting that has left outlying districts isolated from the city center.
On Tuesday, Saleh's forces shelled several neighborhoods of the city, killing one person and destroying dozens of homes, medics and residents said.
Saleh had signed a deal earlier in this month, in which he handed power to the Vice President. The initiative, which was signed in the Saudi capital Riyadh, was brokered by Gulf cooperation council.
