Protest against “Humiliating” Wage Hike, Hezbollah Supports

The Syndicate Coordination Committee announced that it will hold a general strike on December 15 to protest the “humiliating decision taken by the cabinet” with respect to the issue of wages

The Syndicate Coordination Committee announced that it will hold a general strike on December 15 to protest the “humiliating decision taken by the cabinet” with respect to the issue of wages, it said in a statement published Thursday.

The statement said that the strike, at Sodeco Square from where protesters will head toward the Grand Serail, will include all high schools, private, public and vocational schools.

Hezbollah’s education office slammed the cabinet’s wage boost decree as it voiced its support to the SCC call for the strike. “The cabinet’s (wage hike decree) is offensive and unfair and doesn’t reflect any seriousness in dealing with the issue,” Hezbollah’s education office said in a statement on Thursday.

The cabinet agreed on Wednesday to raise the minimum wage from 500,000 LL to 600,000 LL. It also agreed to increase wages up to 1 million LL by 30 percent on condition that the increase remains between 150,000 LL and 200,000 LL. As for wages exceeding 1 million LL, the cabinet agreed to a 20 percent raise as long as the increase does not exceed 275,000 LL.
