Ten members of the Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO) have reportedly escaped from Camp Ashraf, the terrorist group's base in Iraq's Diyala province.

After fleeing from the camp, the MKO members surrendered themselves to the closest police station in Baquba on Friday.

According to an Iraqi security official, the group members escaped from the camp due to the oppression of MKO authorities and requested the Iraqi officials to help them leave the country.

Iraq, which considers the MKO as a threat to its national security, agreed on Wednesday to a UN appeal to extend the December 31 deadline to close Camp Ashraf.

Last week, the MKO announced that it would accept the UN offer to relocate to a recently vacated US military base, Camp Liberty, in northeast of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, where they would wait for resettlement in other countries on certain conditions.

Iran has repeatedly called on the Iraqi government to expel the group, but the US has blocked the expulsion by mounting pressure on the Iraqi government.
