EU Doubles Aid to Haiti to Avoid ’Unpredictable’ Crisis

EU doubles aid to Haiti inorder to avoid "humanitarian crisis of unpredictable proportions".

The European Commission said on Monday it will double aid to the cholera-gripped Haiti to avoid humanitarian crisis of unpredictable proportions" as the epidemic claims more victims.

Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva said an extra 10 million Euros (13.2 million dollars) had been gathered to help combat the killer epidemic, following 12 million Euros already sent.

"Some 3,000 people are infected and this figure could be multiplied by four," she said.
"If the necessary measures are taken we can fight this," she said. "If not, Haiti faces a humanitarian crisis of unpredictable proportions."

With 26 deaths a day currently, compared to 22 a day at the beginning of the month, aid workers are struggling to stem the epidemic.
The new aid is available for NGOs on the ground "as they tell us they can use the funding," Georgieva said.

Latest data say 93,222 people have been affected by cholera, with 2,120 killed in a country still struggling to overcome the effects of last January's earthquake that left more than 250,000 dead and 1.3 million homeless.
