An Arab governmental source told Reuters news agency Sunday that the Arab League panel will ask the Arab foreign ministers today to extend the observer mission to Syria one more month.
An Arab League panel held a meeting Sunday morning to discuss the report on its observer mission in Syria.
Qatari Foreign Minister Hamad bin Jassem Al-Thani chaired the meeting that included the Algerian, Egyptian, Omani, Saudi and Sudanese foreign ministers, as well as the AL Secretary General Nabil Al-Arabi.
Al-Arabi has received Saturday evening a report from the observer mission team about the situation in Syria.
The report, which was presented by the observer mission team chief Mohammad Ahmad Al-Dabi blamed both the authorities and the opposition for the violence in Syria, the un-named official source was quoted as saying.
“The report is divided into three parts, the first includes a detailed demonstration to the observer missions’ work, the second listed the weak points in the team’s work, and the third included suggestions on how to deal with these weaknesses,” the source explained.
The Arab diplomat further stated that the report emphasized that the observer mission should continue its work in Syria, but that it should also be reinforced on the administrative and the logistic level.
Moreover, the source pointed out that the observer mission’s report demanded media support for the team, clarifying that “the observer mission was exposed to wide media campaigns since the first day it started working.”
Information has revealed earlier that the league was also likely to expand the observer mission in Syria to more than 300 observers.
