"Mortars were fired from Orakzai and hit two houses in Hangu. Six people were killed and eight injured,"
At least six people were killed and other eight were wounded on Friday, including women and children, in a mortar attack in northwest Pakistan, police said.
Mortars slammed into two houses in Hangu, a town that has been a flashpoint for sectarian clashes.
They were fired from the neighboring district of Orakzai, part of Pakistan's semi-autonomous tribal areas on the border with Afghanistan.
"Mortars were fired from Orakzai and hit two houses in Hangu. Six people were killed and eight injured," Gul Jamal, a local police official, told AFP.
Fazal Naeem, a police spokesman, confirmed the attack and the toll.
"There were two children and a woman (among the dead)," he told AFP.
The attack took place as Shiite Muslims marked Ashura, which marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (PBUH) in the year of 680.
