Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his Russian counterpart President Dimitry Medvedev emphasized peaceful resolution of Syrian unrests during a phone call Wednesday.

Both steady presidents emphasized on need for further development of relations between the two countries as well as joint cooperation to help improvement of peace and security in the region.

“Reform is the best solution for Syria unrests and outside powers' efforts to provoke instability and separatism are against regional peace and security,” Ahmadinejad added.

Medvedev for his part warned about outside interference in Syria, adding that provocative efforts of outside powers and their regional allies will develop separatism and threatens regional peace and security.

Despite the nearly 10-month-old US-lead unrests in Syria, unrests in Damascus have been relatively quieted, but violence in the vicinity of the capital has been on the rise.

Iran and Russia have a long history of economic and socio-political relations.

As confrontation between the United States and Iran escalates, the country is finding itself further pushed into an alliance with China and Russia.

Russia and Iran also share a common interest in limiting the political influence of the United States in Central Asia. This has led the Shanghai Cooperation Organization to extend to Iran observer status in 2005, and offer full membership in 2006.

Iran's relations with the organization, which is dominated by Russia and China, represents the most extensive diplomatic ties Iran has shared since the 1979 revolution.

Iran and Russia have co-founded the Gas Exporting Countries Forum along with Qatar.
