British Foreign Minister William Hague ruled out sending peacekeeping mission to Syria, saying: “We need peace to keep it”.
“It is right that the Arab League has suggested sending peacekeeping mission to Syria, however to make it effective, there must be peace to keep it”, Hague told Lebanese Daily As-Safir.
“At this time we don’t have it (peace), for we need a ceasefire by the regime against the civilians in order to make the peacekeeping mission effective”, he added.
Meanwhile, Hague said that his country was “offering other aids to the Syrian opposition”.
“I have met the Syrian National Council (SNC) on Friday and I have offered them some aid, and we’ll do that with other opposition parties. For that we will intensify our contact with (opposition), considering it as the legal representative of the Syrian people”, the daily quoted the British FM in its Tuesday edition.
On Monday the European Union adopted sanctions on Syria’s central bank and froze the assets of several Syrian government officials.
It also recognized the SNC as the “legal representative for the Syrians who are seeking for democratic and peaceful change”.
