Iran Warships Transit through Suez for Return Trip

Iranian warships are due to arrive in zone one of the country’s Naval Forces later.

Two Iranian Navy ships that made their first ever journey last month en route to Syria following Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution are currently sailing through the Suez canal before heading toward the Red Sea in a return trip.

The Alvand, a frigate, and the supply ship Kharg will pass through the Red Sea later on Thursday and enter the Gulf of Aden, the Public Relations of Iran's Army said on March 3. The Iranian warships are due to arrive in zone one of the country's Naval Forces later.

Iran's official Fars news agency, quoting top naval commanders, said the ships are the 33,000-tonne refueling and support vessel Kharg and the 1,500-tonne light patrol frigate Alvand.

On February 22, Iranian vessels, Khark and Alvand, crossed the Suez Canal, a strategic international shipping route in Egypt en route to Syria after Cairo had "agreed to allow the two Iranian warships to transit the Suez Canal."

Iran's navy chief, Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayari, said on Monday that Iran's dispatch of two warships to the Mediterranean last week was not aggressive in aim.

Israel, however, has placed its Navy on alert, denouncing the naval sailing as an act of provocation and a "powerplay."

The United States -- the most influential NATO member -- has also announced that it will be "watching carefully to see where these ships go and the implications of that."
