The United States has warned Iran through Russia that it has a last chance in the negotiations expected in April to avoid military strikes against its nuclear program, Russia's Kommersant daily revealed.
In a report it published Wednesday, the newspaper indicated that “US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had told Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov that the talks between Iran and world powers were a last chance to resolve the crisis.”
“She asked her Russian colleague to make this clear to the Iranian authorities”, the paper added, noting that “Washington has no diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic.”
Kommersant pointed out that “their discussion took place after Monday's UN Security Council meeting on Syria in New York.”
While the report gave no further details on the kind of military action that Tehran could face, it said that “Russian diplomats at the United Nations believed it was a “matter of when, not if" Israel would strike against Iran.”
In parallel, the Russian daily stated that “the Russian military was now at a state of mobilized readiness to protect the country from the knock-on effects of a possible conflict.”
Moreover, it said that “a special Russian commission had already drawn up a top secret action plan for ensuring the security of Russian citizens in the case of a military strike against Iran.”
Without directly commenting on the paper's claims, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told Kommersant that Russia would do everything to ensure that the crisis was solved politically.
"The war is not going to solve the problem and will create a million new ones and will be fraught with serious consequences for many countries," Ryabkov said.
