UN and Arab League Special Envoy to Syria Kofi Annan’s spokesman Ahmad Fawzi stated that the delegation that Annan appointed will discuss in Damascus Monday the implementation of some of its proposals and other details related to ending violence in the country.
In a related context, Arab League Secretary General Nabil Al-Arabi said in a statement to the Saudi daily, Okaz, that “the UN observer mission comes as part of the joint work between the AL and the UN to end the massacres in Syria.”
“The delegation, which has the AL’s complete support will have a major role in providing the Security Council with all the facts about what is really happening in Syria,” he added, considering that “the Syrian regime’s insistence on committing massacres proves it has used up all the diplomatic methods”.
Al-Arabi had begun Sunday a four-day European tour that includes Belgium and Switzerland, in which he will discuss the Syrian developments with officials in the European Union.
He is scheduled to meet with High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton in Brussels to discuss with her the Syrian situation, and will head after that to Geneva to meet with Kofi Annan over the Syrian crisis and the latter’s mission there.
