Minister of Prisoners Affairs Issa Qaraqea said Monday night that detainee Hana Shalabi was transferred to Israel’s Meir hospital after a serious deterioration in her health state.
Minister of Prisoners Affairs Issa Qaraqea said Monday night that detainee Hana Shalabi, who has been on a hunger strike for 34 days protesting Israel’s administrative detention policy, was transferred to Israel’s Meir hospital after a serious deterioration in her health state.
Qaraqea added in a press conference he held that “Shalabi was transferred after she was examined by a doctor from the Physicians for Human Rights, after three hours of stalling by the Israeli authorities.”
A statement issued Monday by the organization said that “the deterioration is expressed in a process of muscle breakdown, with a weight loss of 14 kg since the onset of the hunger strike, a very slow pulse, and a drop in blood sodium levels. These symptoms could indicate grave damage to the heart and the beginning of the breakdown of the heart muscle, which could lead to heart failure at any moment.”
The PHR statement pointed out that Shalabi has refused to take any medications, and called upon the “local and the international community to act immediately and intervene for the release of Shalabi, and to act to end Israel’s use of administrative detention.”
On Tuesday, the Zionist Ofer military quart held a session for an administrative medical examination to Shalabi.
However, the ministry’s attorney Fadi Qawasmi said that the Israeli administration refused to give him a permission to see the detainee or contact her in any way after she was transferred to the hospital.
