Many sources expected that Sleiman would voice Lebanon’s support for any political solution in Syria, especially after Damascus accepted UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan’s initiative.
Lebanese President Michel Sleiman is due in the Iraqi capital for the Arab Summit on Thursday. He is going to declare the country’s stance in several issue, on the top of them is the Syrian scene.
Many sources expected that Sleiman would voice Lebanon’s support for any political solution in Syria, especially after Damascus accepted UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan’s initiative.
As-Safir Lebanese daily quoted a diplomatic source in its Wednesday edition that Lebanon’s participation in Baghdad summit “comes in its natural context with respect to Beirut’s advanced position which requires it to be at the heart of any dialogue and openness process”.
The source added that Lebanon’s stance at the summit, regarding the Syrian issue, “will stress on halting the violence from any side and on the peaceful solution through fulfilling reforms”.
“Lebanon will recall for a political solution as it will back the UN-Arab League initiative which will contribute to this solution which will be agreed on”.
The source stressed that Lebanon was going on with the disassociation policy, “except for what is related to the ouster (of President Assad) and the military interference”.
He also noted that the atmosphere was no more intense like before since Syria has accepted UN-AL envoy Kofi Annan’s initiative.
“The Lebanese stance will also tackle the Arab-Israeli struggle, since this summit comes ten years after the launch of the Arab peace initiative with Israel in Beirut. It also comes at a time Israel goes on with refusing the requirements of the peace”.
The source noted that Lebanon “will also tackle the Iraqi issue as it will back its unity and stability”.
