Few days ago, the Bahraini regime announced it would escalate repression against peaceful protesters. It has been clear this escalation was also against funerals in the Gulf Kingdom.
Regime forces on Friday attacked a massive funeral for a journalist, shooting a mourner and injuring several others.
As they were mourning Ahmed Ismail al-Samadi, who was martyred during a protest late last month, the mourners’ second crime was that they called for the release of the prominent human rights activist, Abdulhad al-Khawaja, who has been for two months going on a hunger strike.
As the funeral was over, regime forces brutally attacked thousands of people, firing tear gas bombs and live bullets at them.
A 15 year-old boy was in intensive care on Saturday after being shot during the clashes.
Mohammed Ahmed Abdel Aziz was among several people injured during the ceremony for al-Samadi.
He sustained bullet wounds to the chest as police fired tear gas and live rounds on mourners.
Khawaja’s health has been deteriorating, with international organizations and political groups in Bahrain were warning his life was at risk, as he was transferred to a military hospital in the prison.
