Thousands of demonstrators protested Sunday at Manama's Al-Qudaibiya Palace, where Bahrain's cabinet meets, chanting slogans against the tiny Gulf state's government and King Hamad.
Police stood behind one gate, looking on as the flag-waving demonstrators chanted "topple Hamad! Topple Hamad!". "Hey Khalifa, get out! Get out!" demonstrators chanted, referring to the country's long-time prime minister Sheikh Khalifa bin Salman al-Khalifa, who has an office at the palace and has been a target of demonstrations. "We want the prime minister to go," said Alaa al-Nasr, a 24-year-old demonstrator. Protesters also chanted for the 2002 constitution, which they say gave too much power to the monarchy, to be scrapped.
The kingdom's cabinet usually meets on Sunday at the palace, but it was unclear if the meeting had been moved elsewhere, or if it was cancelled.
On the 21st day since demonstrations began, the anti-government protest movement showed no sign of flagging. In addition to the protest at Al-Qubaidiya, demonstrators continue to keep vigil in hundreds of tents at Manama's Pearl Square, which has become the epicentre of the anti-government protests.
