The Arab League officials condemned the brutality of Israeli forces against the Palestinians during the Sunday meeting, discussing possible means to bring an end to the sufferings of the Palestinian people.

Arab League’s Deputy Secretary General Ahmed Bin Helli said that the bloc will ask the UN General Assembly to hold an emergency meeting to resolve the ongoing crisis in Israeli prisons.

“We will call on the UN General Assembly in Geneva to hold an emergency meeting to find a solution for this escalating crisis,” Helli noted.

At least 1,600 Palestinian prisoners have been on open-ended hunger strike in the Israeli jails since 17 April to protest solitary confinement and imprisonment without charge.

Speaking to the Press TV correspondent following a press conference in the Palestinian embassy in Cairo, the Palestinian ambassador said the Arab states are standing in solidarity with all Palestinian prisoners in Israel.

The Palestinian official also called on the Arab countries to pile up pressure on Israel to release all the Palestinian detainees.

The Arab league officials also called for international intervention and highlighted the necessity of legal and political measures against Israeli violent actions.

According to an April 1, 2012 report published by the non-governmental Palestinian prisoner support and human rights association, Addameer, at least 4,610 “political” Palestinian prisoners are held in Israeli jails.
