Prime Minister Najib Miqati on Monday snapped back at Beirut’s MPs over their call for him to resign.
Prime Minister Najib Miqati on Monday snapped back at Beirut’s MPs over their call for him to resign, noting that he is trying to “douse the fire ignited by some Mustaqbal Movement MPs through their fiery, irresponsible stances.”
"In the midst of the efforts of the Prime Minister to restore calm to the different areas after a series of bloody events, we have been astonished by the statement released by Mustaqbal bloc MPs of Beirut,” a statement of PM Information Office said late Monday.
“The call for the government’s resignation has become present in all the statements and remarks of the Mustaqbal MPs, which reflects a deep desire to regain what they consider an undisputable right,” the statement read.
The office stressed that “the same duty that obligated him to undertake the responsibility (of forming the government) compels him today to continue to shoulder his responsibilities and to seek to spare Lebanon the woes of the wrong political bets of some parties.”
The statement also noted that "the irony lies in that some of Mustaqbal MPs speak two languages. They apparently send positive messages under the banner of national responsibility to collaborate and overcome the differences in attitudes, while they secretly resort to the insults and to spoil all positive efforts trying to foil them.”
“This duplication will no longer fool anyone,” the office stressed.
Miqati also accused some Mustaqbal MPs of encouraging their supporters to take to streets and engage in armed clashes, “the last of which was what happened overnight in Beirut.”
He accused some MPs of distorting facts, saying they “have deliberately overlooked the stance declared by the premier against the letter of the Syrian envoy to the U.N.”
Earlier on Monday, Mustaqbal MPs held Miqati responsible for the fierce clashes that erupted in Beirut overnight Sunday, calling on him to resign.
Tariq al-Jdideh area of Beirut witnessed Sunday night violent clashes when militants of Al-Mustaqbal party stormed the place, firing RBG projectiles and heavy gun fires.
The militants attacked the head office of the Arab Movement party. Two citizens were killed and another 18 were injured.
