Annan in Middle East, From Beirut to Doha UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan visited Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Miqati on Friday at the Grand Serail, the National News Agency reported.

Annan arrived in Beirut on Thursday and met with President Michel Sleiman and Speaker Nabih Berri.

The international envoy left Beirut on Friday afternoon for Doha following a one-day visit to Lebanon.

After his meeting with Miqati, Annan said the United Nations was going to make efforts to help Lebanon with the issue of the Lebanese visitors kidnapped in Syria.

“I discussed the issue of the Lebanese abductees in Syria with Premier Miqati, and [the United Nations] will make efforts to help,” Annan said during a joint press conference with PM Miqati at Beirut’s Grand Serail.

“The Lebanese authorities confirmed to us that its borders with Syria are not being used to [smuggle] arms.”

According to various media reports, 11 Lebanese men were kidnapped in Aleppo province as they were returning home by bus from visiting the holy shrines in Iran. The current location of the abductees is unknown amid conflicting reports.
