One person was killed and at least five people were injured in renewed clashes between the Jabal Mohsen and Bab alTabbaneh neighborhoods of the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli, the National News Agency reported Saturday.

Sporadic gun and rocket fire broke out at midnight and continued through the night, forcing some residents of the port city to flee their homes, a security official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

The overnight battles with Rocket Propelled Grenades (RBGs) and machineguns calmed by 5:00 a.m. but intermittent sniper fire continued, leaving Khaled al-Rifai dead.

Five people were injured overnight, two of them seriously, in the fighting between the mostly Sunni Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen, NNA said.

The agency also said a house owned by Abdul Rahman Hamad was engulfed in flames in the area of Starco in Bab al-Tabbaneh when it was hit with an RPG.

It added that the Lebanese army is still deployed in the two areas.

Last May, at least eight people were killed in clashes between the rival neighborhoods that erupted over the controversial arrest of Salafist Shadi al-Mawlawi, who was released last week.

The Tripoli gunbattles, in addition to deadly fighting between al-Mustaqbal party militants and the Arab Movement Party supporters in Beirut’s Tariq al-Jedideh neighborhood, threatened to push Lebanon towards uncertainty.
