Joint UN and Arab League Special Envoy for Syria Kofi Annan says Iran should play a part in resolving the crisis in Syria, which has plagued the Arab nation for more than a year.
“I believe Iran should be part of the solution," he told media during a press conference at the United Nations office in Geneva, Switzerland, on Friday.
The former UN chief also stressed Tehran’s participation in the Syria Contact Group meeting, which is due to be held in Geneva, on June 30.
The remarks come a day after Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov emphasized Iran's involvement in the international conference on Syria.
Meanwhile, Arab League’s deputy secretary general Ahmed Bin Hilli deputy secretary general Ahmed Ben Hilli has underscored the need for Iran’s participation in the international conference on Syria.
"In my view, all the players taking part in the Syrian crisis must be part of this contact group," he said on June 21.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011, where many people, have been killed, including security forces.
Damascus blames ''outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups'' for the security and political situation in the country, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
