German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Thursday after her meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati that her country would continue supporting Lebanon “through its participation in the UNIFIL,” Miqati ‘s press office reported.
Merkel also reiterated her support for the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, which is investigating the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri.
In turn, Miqati said that he discussed with the German chancellor his cabinet’s policy “aiming at keeping Lebanon away from the dangers and repercussions of the situation in the region, especially in Syria.”
“Mrs. Merkel voiced her understanding of Lebanon’s policy, [since] Germany is keen on Lebanon’s stability and [security],” Miqati added.
Lebanon’s political scene is split between supporters of the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad regime, led by Hezbollah, and the pro-Western March 14 camp.
