Koura’s parliamentary by-elections to fill in the vacant Greek-Orthodox seat were ongoing on Sunday amid the deployment of security and army forces, the National News Agency reported.
A fierce battle was recorded between the Lebanese Forces candidate Fadi Karam and Syrian Social National Party candidate Walid al-Azar.
Four other candidates are running to fill the Greek Orthodox parliamentary seat left vacant after the death of MP Farid Habib, they include Youssef Skaff, Jean Mefrej, Naeem al-Oujaimi, and Georges Matar.
A total of 57,537 voters have been recorded in al-Koura and they cast their votes at 128 ballot boxes.
Interior Minister Marwan Charbel said in a press conference that his ministry has not received complaints about “bribery” in the Koura by-elections so far, adding that the voter turnout was “around 32 percent.”
“No form of security clashes had been recorded between the two parties and security forces are prepared to arrest the briber and the one bribed,” Charbel assured.
The Interior Ministry had announced that citizens can voice any complaints they had regarding the by-elections by calling the hotline number 1766.
