A complaint was filed with Egyptian State Security prosecutors on Sunday against former liberal MP Mohamed Abu-Hamed accusing the latter of attempting to overthrow Egypt's elected president.
The complaint was lodged by an Egyptian citizen identified as Mahmoud Abdel-Rahman, who further accused Abu-Hamed of receiving foreign funding from Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea. with the aim of inciting Egyptian Coptic-Christians to protest against the legitimate government, Ahram Online reported.
Abdel-Rahman will soon be given a hearing by prosecutors, after which Abu-Hamed will be called to answer the charges.
The complaint states that, during a program that recently aired on a religious television channel, a caller – who claimed to be an activist named Mohamed Othman – said he had information regarding Abu-Hamed and how the latter had received foreign funding to incite sectarian strife in Egypt.
The caller went on to say that Abu-Hamed had received the funding during a recent visit to Lebanon, where he met with Geagea.
Along with contentious talk show host Tawfiq Okasha, Abu-Hamed had been a leading advocate for last Friday's demonstrations in Cairo against Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi and the Muslim Brotherhood.
