Yemeni police shot dead a protester and wounded five others when they opened fire on the crowd.

The demonstrators were protesting against an offensive film to Islam and Prophet Mohammad (pbuh), which was broadcast in the United States and produced by an Israeli-American.

The protesters were driven out of the embassy later, as security forces used water cannon and fired warning shots. Police also fired warning shots earlier to disperse thousands of protesters as they approached the main gate of the mission.

“O, messenger of Allah... O, Mohammed!” demonstrators chanted.

Yemeni President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi apologized to US over the attack on the embassy.

An embassy statement emailed to Reuters said Yemen's government condemned the attack by protesters angry at the film, adding security forces had restored order at the complex.

The statement said: “Fortunately no casualties were reported from this chaotic incident. The government of Yemen will honour international obligations to ensure the safety of diplomats and will step up security presence around all foreign missions.”
